Using healthy horse blood as raw material,sterile blood is collected in a closed system and filtered through micropores.The characteristic is a light yellow clear liquid without bacteria, fungi,mycoplasma, etc. Horse serum has higher protein content and less trace metalsthan fetal bovine serum. In some applications, it can be used as a substitutefor fetal bovine serum and is an important culture medium for hospitals,research institutions, animal vaccines, and biopharmaceutical manufacturers.

Horse serum has been used as a supplementin minimum essential medium for cerebrocortical neuronal−glial cell culturesand RPMI-40 medium for PC12 cells derived fromrat adrenal medulla pheochromocytoma.It has also been used inimmunohistochemistry of Florida manatee brain sections.

Normal horse serum may be used as ablocking agent and controls in immunoassays. For immunohistochemistry andimmunocytochemistry, 10% horse serum was used as blocking agent in variousStudies.
Horse serum was used in immunostaining for blocking non-specific antibodiesbinding.
