Transferrin is the main iron-containing protein in plasma. It is responsible for carrying iron ions absorbed by the digestive tube and iron ions released by the degradation of red blood cells in the bone marrow as a complex form for the formation of mature red blood cells. Transferrin is essential for the growth of most cell lines in serum-free media. Iron-saturated transferrin is the form of transferrin bound to iron ions, which is the most effective form for promoting cell growth. This product is expressed in Pichia pastoris, which does not contain any anima-derived components, and therefore the risk of blood-borne pathogens contaminations can be avoided.
